Storage space in both entrances is really generous. I was thinking to store equipment in one and cook in the other. If you want the technical reliability Terra Nova is known for, but your budget doesn’t stretch to their expensive tents, sub-brand Wild Country is a great bet for value for money. The Helm Compact 3 is affordably-priced, providing near-premium performance for a less-than-premium price. It’s not the cheapest out there, and it’s far from the most expensive, but the mid-range price-tag gets you a solid all-rounder of a tent – and you can’t complain with that. You also get a two-year guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship, which gives you added peace of mind. Wild Country Helm Compact 3: Verdict Flysheet: For maximum weatherproofing, a tent's flysheet – the waterproof outer – should peg out flush to the ground. It should also be easily adjustable via tension straps so that it's taut, stable and well-shaped. Some flysheets don't quite reach the ground, which aids ventilation but risks water ingress. The mesh panels on both inner doors, combined with the external corner vents, provide plenty of ventilation in warm weather. And the space between the two outer doors and the inner tent gives you a great deal of gear storage space, as well as a sheltered spot for cooking. The flysheet is made from a TripleRip silicone coated polyamide with an impressive waterproof rating of 3000mm (hydrostatic head). Cleverly, the upper parts of the fly have a 20D strength rating while the lower parts, those more at risk of abrasion, are rated at 40D. The inner features a 15D ripstop polyamide, a super fine bugproof mesh, and a 40D polyamide bathtub style floor with a 4000mm hydrostatic head. The poles, on the other hand, are made from a DAC Featherlite NSL, whilst the pegs are v-shaped and made from DAC aluminium alloy. All the materials here are made without PVC plastic and have a PFC-free DWR treatment. MATERIALS Outer 70D polyester, hydrostatic head 6,000mm Groundsheet 70D polyester, hydrostatic head 6,000mm Poles PowerLite alloy Pitching is fairly easy, with interconnecting aluminium poles forming a freestanding frame which you clip the inner onto, before attaching the flysheet on top. But bear in mind this is an inner-first tent, so you do run the risk of everything getting wet if it’s raining.
The flysheet and groundsheet are made from a silicone-treated ripstop nylon with a 1,200mm hydrostatic head rating and an additional PU coating, while the tent inner is a breathable ripstop nylon with polyester mesh. All seams are taped with a waterproof, solvent free PU tape and the poles are DAC Featherlite. The aluminium poles are colour-coded to make it easier to erect; although, because it’s an inner-first design, there is the problem of pitching in rain. MATERIALS Outer 68D ripstop polyester, hydrostatic head 1,500mm Groundsheet 68D taffeta polyester, hydrostatic head 10,000mm Poles Aluminium
The High Side gets its name from the pre-bent, slightly skew-whiff poles, which create a “high side” over the door. This unusual design helps maximise the liveable space inside the tent, without adding to the weight or affecting the low profile, which is great for windy conditions. I’m 6ft 0ins tall and this is not really long enough inside. My feet touch the end whilst my face is uncomfortably close to the wall at the other end, remember that the walls are not vertical – they slope towards the centre of the tent, so whilst the footprint appears on paper to be adequate, the full length is not useable. If you are say, 5ft 10ins or less, it would be fine. Outdoor enthusiasts with kids have been crying out for something in between these two extremes, and with the Habitude from MSR, their prayers may have been answered. In warmer conditions, the large, zipped ventilation panels at each end let you create a good airflow, keeping temperatures down and minimising condensation. Although this is a 2-man, I would say it will be a tight 2-man. More a comfortable 1-man which I was hoping for.The name ‘super bivy’ is a spot-on description of this. Big Sky have come up with a shelter that you could arguably say comes with all of the benefits of a bivy bag without the claustrophobic downsides. It’s very similar in design to the Six Moon Designs Wisp Bivy – also reviewed here, only it has an extra mini pole and it’s a bit lighter, presumably because it doesn’t have the mesh vents along the base that the SMD Lunar Solo has.
