In particular this gives the whole record a tremendous feeling of scale, the gargantuan echo of the production casting earlier, more minimalist and claustrophobic excursions into sharp relief. You hear minimalism buried in the fuzz, and it’s also easy to tell that Frost is fond of industrial, punk, and metal.

And after that slight disappointment experienced by all avid listeners that comes with a significant change of tone; if not of style, it’s easy to see the two records as near companion pieces. Nolan" is the key track here and one of the most impressive compositions in recent memory, an ever-evolving tableau that encompasses the widest array of Frost's sonic predilections. Aurora is another piece of decimation, deconstructing industrial and ambient sounds into primal, fearful forms. At 26 he moved to Camberwell, joining its long-established colony of paleo-personal trainers and making music on the subjects of protein shakes and cocaine. The entire record exists in that split second before the aircraft is ripped asunder, G-forces bending and ripping metal and you, the pilot, teetering on the brink of blacking out. Things just get nastier with the scathing blur of ‘Diphenyl Oxalate’, an experience softened by the chiming bells and driving percussion of ‘Venter’. But to divert to the personal somewhat, such moments, whilst grandiose and eardrum searing, are not the record’s most interesting moments, even if they are clearly its defining ones. It brings to mind Frost's talk of fighting to contain his compositions on A U R O R A, and that struggle shows.

Just as these natural phenomena create a feast for the eyes via two-million-degree solar winds, so does Frost via textures and sounds that are by no means conventionally beautiful. I don't know, I like some of the sounds this makes, but it's very serious, very intense and there, which is sometimes good and sometimes like the record is shouting close to your face about coconut water in the corner of a bar, all muscles and beard oil.He cast himself as a kind of endurance artist on the cover of his 2007 album Theory of Machines and, in 2013, directed his own theatrical adaption of Iain Banks’ novel The Wasp Factory. Ben Frost hasn’t lost the knack of creating beauty from opposing musical forces, and on ‘Aurora’ he’s right in your face with his most dynamic and unhinged album yet. He’s been a very busy man ever since, producing albums for The Swans and Tim Hecker, soundtracks for films, writing an opera, as well as collaborations in art and modern dance. Like Earth’s own engine firing up, a siren squeals, driving through a swelling mist of murk and summoning a crescendo of elemental fury.

It's a bit reminiscent of a soundtrack in a few ways, having this sort of expressive imagery to it that feels very abstract but also somewhat meaningful, though any perceived meaning is of course very subjective. If you want to try a new craft, these super cute crochet kits could be just what you're looking for! Even more awe inspiring is “ Venter,” which makes its slow ascent from apocalyptic tattoo into claustrophobic death rave. Where previous compositions felt somewhat, uh, frosty and chilling, the electronics here feel lighter, more airy, if still possessed of that same icy, crystalline touch.

This bleeds into “Nolan”, a track that would fit easily on Tim Hecker’s Harmony in Ultraviolet, featuring a percussive thump—sticks rattling, synthesizers lapping. The cold on this CD (though probably falsely felt a bit because of his surname being Frost) permeates the fact that it's a summertime in Florida, and I don't think I've ever been so eager for an album of this kind to do to me what it does.
