Description

Many practicing Christians genuinely do believe in an actual future heaven and hell, as opposed to being an analogy for enlightenment and the vicious circles we engage in on this earth. This basic approach accords much in my understanding with the basics of Zen, which takes Buddhist ideas about the nature of suffering and the nonexistence of the self, but adds to the idea that enlightenment is something instantly attainable through meditation, rather than the product of thousands of lifetimes of karmic investment.

If I remember correctly, the central idea is the Daoist principle of "invest in loss" as we say in Taiji Quan practice. He challenges your thoughts, your definition of "right", cuts through the bullshit of our constant yearning for security and approval. This philosophy exists only in few schools of world philosophy: two schools in Buddhism, two in Indian Hinduism, and Chinese Daosim. The perspective of Alan is very intense for someone who isn't used to seeing things differently than what we've been taught, especially in the Western Culture. That is, our evolutionary psychological design which was undermining our happiness earlier, is now undermining our attempts to rid the problems of happiness.

Its interest is not in itself, but in the people and problems of which it is aware; these are 'itself. In this fascinating book, Alan Watts explores man's quest for psychological security, examining our efforts to find spiritual and intellectual certainty in the realms of religion and philosophy.Such a system is a vicious circle, and has the same logical structure as a statement which states something about itself, for example, "I am lying", when it is implied that the statement itself is a lie. Quite the contrary, it’s the stability and usefulness of this abstraction that makes it very easy to confuse for reality.
