The simple message of this book is so fundamental to the Christian life that, were I to state it, many would say, “I know that, I don’t need a book to tell me that” but this wholehearted look at Jesus, the real Jesus, fills the heart points you away from you to Him. It really is a book that should be meditated on and put down while you think and breathe in the realities of Christ and his work.

I landed on two after much internal conflict and it's primarily because of one paragraph in the preface that tainted the entire book for me sadly. One last thing, I think the men who wrote the book (their picture is in the back) look like what I would picture Will and Chester looking like, only older. And as if things weren't bad enough already in the heat and darkness, he stumbles across a Styx plot with terrible implications for the world above – and a sister who isn't finished yet . Ortlund rejects the common evangelical push to do better and be better types of lifestyles and instead draws our eyes back to our Savior as the means by which we are to grow.Ortlund (PhD, Wheaton College) serves as senior pastor of Naperville Presbyterian Church in Naperville, Illinois. First, some of the language of the book could be taken to suggest a sanctification model that stresses a moment of change (Keswick/Higher Life Theology).

Importantly, Ortlund does not suggest that such experience is normative, nor does he indicate that it is necessary. They are both under the umbrella of union, but the process of sanctification is also spurred on by a proper recognition of what took place at justification. For Lewis, Ortlund says, this “late-in-life-awakening” came home to him “in a decisive and permanently transforming way” (105). To be clear, I do not think Ortlund is endorsing such a model, but some passages struck too close for my comfort.

It’s only with that foundation that I can put to death the stubborn sins in my life and “work out [my] own salvation with fear and trembling” (Phil 2:12). You don't wait til he's dead then start to take your other kids and realize o never mind it's too hard so ill just drop one off here and another there and disappear alone. I've read many books about change and growth in the Christian life, but have often walked away from those books bogged down by so many details, processes, and such. Having marinated in the wisdom, beauty, and encouragement of Dane’s new book, I totally understand why my friend chose deeper as the primary image for the title. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. This book really bothered me, because I so wanted to like this series, but the characters dr What are the processes, the steps, the programs necessary to satisfy these endless thirsts for significance? With reading, sometimes it’s as much about the time in which a book finds the reader as it is about the inherent essence of work itself.

By looking to Christ and truly understanding who He is, and what He did for us, we grow to love Him more. Psalm 1 says that the person who delights in God’s word and meditates on it day and night is like a “tree planted by streams of water”. If you take your eyes off of Jesus Christ and direct your gaze to your own growth, you will prevent the very growth you desire” ( Deeper, p. After intense media interest around its launch, Tunnels was published in almost forty countries and was a New York Times Bestseller, achieving sales of more than a million copies worldwide. We keep hearing how going topside again is impossible and the deeps is a place where most go to die.

Deeper: Real Change for Real Sinners by Dane Ortlund outlines biblical truths to help us gaze on the person and work of the Lord Jesus. There are larger and more in-depth works on the subject of sanctification, but Ortlund's Deeper: Real Change for Sinners lays the ground work that every Christian should know, believe, and live out. It's a great teaching tool for an individual, a parent, or a small group to navigate through and improve or learn how to focus on God's Word. We’re forgetting growth isn’t about finding something new but rather about going deeper into what we already have. Essentially, they are results or expressions of a relationally deep attachment to Christ, not the other way around.
