Besides the meticulously-considered exploration of the work of three artists, the other main draw here is the way that Keenan uses that exploration to venture into explorations of art, literature, film, music, and magic. A shadowy scene whose work accents peculiarities of Englishness through the links and affinities they've forged with earlier generations of outsiders. Keenan has done a massive service to all fans of early industrial music in chronicling its history in such depth and detail, and Strange Attractor have brought out a truly beautiful edition, overflowing with photos and scans of gig posters and other ephemera, which really gives a strong sense of the aesthetics of the various artists.

MIT Press Direct is a distinctive collection of influential MIT Press books curated for scholars and libraries worldwide. The new edition comes redesigned and expanded with two new chapters, one of which "traces the transgressive urge that animates industrial culture all the way from Palaeolithic cave art through rock n roll and punk rock and up to contemporary noise music", as well as previously unseen photographs, and will be published in late November by Strange Attractor Press, the publishing house that put out tQ editor John Doran's recent book, Jolly Lad.It takes a little while to get to the early 90's which is when the motors of all groups really started going and some sections are a little light on information and analysis for my personal liking (how more wasn't written on The Inmost Light trilogy is beyond me).

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. There's one hilarious top review on here bemoaning the fact that "hipster" David Keenan didn't get into the weeds of the various overtly nazi groups in the World Serpent orbit, which shows the sort of edgy posturing associated with some of this music. Having] decided that Noddy is a gnostic deity, then it’s a small step to thinking that I might as well worship Punch and Judy. Alongside these names, it also folds Throbbing Gristle, Whitehouse, Shirley Collins, Charles Sims and AE Housman into the esoteric narrative, making for a book that has become highly influential and increasingly pertinent to a lot of music and literature produced in recent years, such as that by Grumbling Fur, English Heretic and Kemper Norton. Finally reading England’s Hidden Reverse, I enjoyed it as much as I’d expected to, but there’s also an element of sadness mixed in. A really great and comprehensive primer on that special niche of dark, occulty, groundless, gothy musical stuff that came out of England starting in the 1970s.
