Philip and Dinah aren’t orphans, only half-orphans – their father is dead, and their mother sends them to stay with various strangers and relatives, because she’s a Modern Woman who has a job as an advertising executive of some kind. and besides, Bill Smugs is pretty well-known as a good guy to anyone who's ever heard of the Adventure series.

The format’s pretty predictable – small group of precocious children get into trouble while uncovering smuggling rings. This book tells the tale of Jack, his sister Lucy-Ann, and their parrot Kiki who go to stay with their new friends, Philip and Dinah, in their isolated old house, "Craggy-Tops". I did wonder, though, why Bill said it would be foolish to go climbing down wells and through underground passages in the dead of night, and that they should wait until morning. Dinah first meets the Trents on the station platform, and is very surprised to see them (as is Jo-Jo) as Philip had kept their arrival a secret. The Island of Adventure was adapted into a 1982 British film directed by Anthony Squire, and starring Norman Bowler as Bill along with Wilfrid Brambell and Eleanor Summerfield.Inscription in ink to front endpaper (dated 1944); part of ink name has transferred across to front pastedown. Boards with rubbing, creasing, edge and corner wear, marks, wear top and bottom of spine, discolouration. They eventually find out that Bill is a member of the police force who has been detailed to keep an eye on Jo-Jo. Until they begin to realize that something very sinister is taking place on the mysterious Isle of Gloom - where a dangerous adventure awaits them in the abandoned copper mines and secret tunnels beneath the sea.

Nice and clean pages but slightly yellow on the outer edges,a couple of creases and light shelf wear on the edges of the pages, small pencil marks impressions inside the first blank page of the book.It is well written and dramatic but it's also funny because of the arguments and mistakes they make. You know the ones, where women should stay at home and do the housekeeping, the kids should probably be at boarding school and the Dad earns the money.

Other splits and tears to wrapper down edges, with a couple of repairs - otherwise, showing signs of chipping. Pictorial hardback (small nicks and scratches on the cover and spine) in VGC, no Dj cover as issued. There’s a brief scene in the middle of that where we see the minions escaping on dinghies in the dark, then the sun has come up and a submarine emerges only to be blown up by a Navy ship. Jack really doesn't seem to mind her tagging along everywhere, but Philip's not entirely happy about it at one point.
