Description

The book is structured in a progressive fashion, following a logical mixing workflow, and developing and building on ideas and techniques throughout. Additionally, reexamination of any chapter reveals situation specific tips that become increasingly relevant as the student gains experience. The 340‑page book contains 20 chapters grouped into four main sections covering hearing and listening, mix preparation, balancing, and sweetening.

When Lynn Fuston, publisher and coordinator of the 3D Audio comparison series, walked up to the Tape Op booth at the New York AES, I immediately started railing on him. First, just so you know who this review is coming from, here’s a quick bio: I’ve been a guitarist for the last 20 years or so, and have been getting more into the production/mixing side of things the last ten years. There is a lot of good info in this book, but was completely taken aback by the overwhelmingly high reviews it got. About The Author: Mike Senior is a professional engineer who has worked with Wet Wet Wet, The Charlatans, Reef, Therapy, and Nigel Kennedy. And all the while, what he's saying is presented in a way that invites you to try his methods, all of which are quite sound (no pun intended, but there it is). Vintage King co-founder Michael Nehra shares some of his love, knowledge, and practical advice for diving into the world of vintage audio gear, and then takes us behind the scenes for a walk through. However, when the charm of long, antisocial hours in dark studios finally wore off, Mike joined the SOS team as Reviews Editor, where he was instrumental in establishing the popular Studio SOS and Mix Rescue columns.

In fact the book is filled with so much great stuff, it's a book that one can read again and again and that can be used as a handy manual during any mixing project.

The step-by-step breakdown, full of explanations and background in an easy-to-understand language was amazing and allowed me to complete my first mix successfully, even with no previous experience. Always seeking new challenges, though, he eventually left the magazine to set up his own training and consultancy business, while also freelancing as an engineer and SOS author.

If you've been figuring out everything yourself or piecing together your workflow based on internet forum posts, this book may bump your work forward by months or years.Different producers are going to have different preferences, technology is going to change over time, and it's not Mike Senior's fault I'm not British!

Mike Senior: Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio (book) | Tape Op Magazine | Longform candid interviews with music producers and audio engineers covering mixing, mastering, recording and music production. Warning: For those readers who get upset when we deviate a bit from matters strictly audio, you should skip ahead to the next microphone review that fits your budget.

As a student with a classical background in a class full of people with either experience playing electric instruments or experience in music technology, I found myself confused and dragging behind. If you already know everything, pick up a copy to skim, then gift it to a friend who's starting out. After a few solid chapters on monitor selection and room treatment, the book deconstructs mixing into a linear process (acknowledging that in reality, no mix process is linear), that starts at a coarse level, then works its way to fine details: setting up sessions; getting basic balances; EQ and compression basics and advanced techniques; bus compression; automation and rides. It has detailed frequency information on individual instruments, for things like “fullness” “attack” “presence” etc.
