In 1981 Eliot’s poems were set to music by Andrew Lloyd Webber as Cats which went on to become the longest-running Broadway musical in history. First illustrated edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author as Old Possum on the front free endpaper, "to the Tandy Fambley from O.

One really likes the sequence of vignettes that accompany the muddle that the Tugger poses when he disrupts a housewife's sewing chores.Ricks and McCue identify "fambly" as a variant spelling and Eliot frequently used it in his letters to the Tandy family. The book features all the poems and is really fun to flip through and read with children, I find myself wanting my own copy. No missing or damaged pages, no tears, possible very minimal creasing, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. Now that I've read it, I was quite shocked at how close some of the songs are in the musical to the poetry.

Rebecca works from her studio in the countryside near Stroud (UK), where she lives with her husband and two children. There are a lot of in-jokes and references, such as a sly nod to The Wasteland, and for some reason I kept of thinking about A Clockwork Orange while watching it. With the possible exception of (Aspara)gus, these names appear to be particular rather than given names of the creatures. I especially loved “The Rum Tum Tugger,” about a contrary cat who always wants what he can’t have and never wants what he’s offered: “When you let him in, then he wants to be out; / He’s always on the wrong side of every door. Eliot was born an American, moved to the United Kingdom in 1914 (at the age of 25), and became a British subject in 1927 at the age of 39.Featuring Macavity, the Mystery Cat; Mr Mistofelees, the Original Conjuring Cat; Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer and all the gang, this is a must for every child's bookshelf and is a great companion to the Andrew Lloyd Webber stage show. I tend to like this better than the Bentley and Gorey editions, and this edition is really well worth it.

To celebrate Old Possum’s 75th anniversary we have commissioned lively new illustrations from Rebecca Ashdown for T.Mistoffelees, Macavity, the Mystery Cat,Asparagus, Bustopher Jones, the man about town, and Skimbleshanks, the railway cat. She grew up by the sea, on the south coast of England, spending most of her childhood reading, writing, drawing and running wild.

I have craved world building, esoteric codes, political machinations, something to offset the Bob Corkers of my mind.He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948 "for his outstanding, pioneer contribution to present-day poetry. Throughout the 1930s he composed the now famous poems about Macavity, Old Deuteronomy, Mr Mistoffelees and many other cats, under the name of ‘Old Possum’.
