As with many short story collections these were (I believe) originally published in magazines and never really intended to make a story arc - indeed rather like the stories of Sherlock Holmes they do contradict each other here and there. Dated but nevertheless entertaining episodic narrative of the dashing young Dr Finlay's encounters with an array of patients. A Bill Simpson Fan Club was set up, Andy Stewart's Dr Finlay was in the Hit Parade for five weeks, and Andrew Cruickshank was invited as a guest of honour at the British Medical Association's annual dinner to speak on medical matters as if he were a real GP. Very similar in format to James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small, each chapter revolves around a new medical case or community problem.

Essential viewing then it was based on the tales of AJ Cronin, himself a qualified doctor and an accomplished author. Although fictional, A J Cronin, who died in 1981, was himself a doctor and has apparently based some of Finlay's experiences on his own. He was made the newly joined junior partner in the Tannochbrae practice of Dr Angus Cameron, played by Andrew Cruickshank, with Janet, their unflappable housekeeper and receptionist at Arden House, played by Barbara Mullen. The lack of content until recently explains why there are so few comments on this popular and long lived series. Finlay is plagued by apparently devoted but ultimately faithless women who seek to attach him in romantic relationships. Following the assassination of President Kennedy on 22 November 1963, the BBC screened Dr Finlay's Casebook as part of its regular programming.Although a doctor, he has a lot in common with Sherlock Holmes, using his guile and intelligence to solve his patients' problems.

Cameron, the craggy senior partner, played by Andrew Cruickshank and Janet, their unflappable housekeeper and receptionist at Arden House, played by Barbara Mullen. The Tannochbrae ‘70s book tries to be a bit racy, lots of unnecessary references to sex and sleaziness. Of the 191 editions, it is thought that only 56 are still known to exist; of these some installments no longer survive in their original format (e.

In contrast to other medical dramas of the period, it was set in a time before the foundation of the National Health Service, in the fictional Scottish settlement of Tannochbrae. We were too shy to speak to him and we had to get off at our station when I assume he went on to Glasgow.
