The "nose" from the bottle seemed very nice, somewhat less bracing than the aftershave. 3-4 sprays and I am off to start my day. 30 minutes later and I can't even detect the faintest iota of scent. NADA! I re-apply about 6 more sprays. Within the hour ALL TRACES have disappeared. WTF??? I am really pissed. This was a disgrace and unless I happened upon a bad bottle (what are the chances of that?), Maurer & Wirtz have destroyed a real icon. Tabac Original is a somewhat unique and unexpected specimen from classic fragrances. Unlike its contemporaries that often came from the Aromatic and Oriental families, it’s a striking Floral Aldehyde. An absolute that is somewhat similar to tobacco in terms of aroma is another natural material – the absolute of Blazing star (Lat. Liatris odoratissima), a plant of the aster family (Lat. Asteraceae): sweet, herbal- coumarin, with undertones of vanilla. Combined with musks, heliotropine, ionones and cinnamon, Liatris absolute creates a very interesting and dry powdery accord. Tabac Original receives very mixed reactions. A few enjoyed the surprisingly floral properties that have been combined with an eau de cologne head. Furthermore, the rounded bitterness was not without its success. Methyl nicotinate combines warm spicy aromatic notes with a distinct tobacco tone, while damascenine (despite its name, a close relative to anthranilates) combines tobacco and floral notes. Tonkavert may also seem quite an interesting compound : chemically speaking , it is a nitril, but one can recognize notes of tonka beans and tobacco in its scent. Tabaxol , for instance, is an extremely intense smelling compound, but when heavily diluted it achieves a roasted, nutty, slightly meaty scent with phenolic and metallic undertones, whereas its 'big brother' mossenate is less aggressive and possesses some interesting orris and ylang-ylang notes. Virginia varieties are the ones most often used to produce the absolute, more rarely people use Burley, the so-called Oriental (Turkish) and Latakia varieties (grown in Syria and Cyprus; upon primary drying, this variety of tobacco is then fire-cured; looking ahead, let me just say that Christopher Sheldrake attempted to reproduce the aroma of that variety of tobacco in his Fumerie Turque, which was created under the strict guidance of Serge Lutens). However, a significant portion found the fragrance far too floral and fatty. Some went as far as comparing the base with a particular women’s fragrance, Yves Saint Laurent Paris. This was accompanied by an intense advertising campaign with the slogan “Du bist das Original” (You are the original). An important role is played by phenols ( cresols, guaiacols, eugenol and its analogs), shaping a medicinal, slightly cured accord. The derivatives of pyrazine give a nutty roasted tone, while furan derivatives impart a caramel note: the effect of 2-acetyl furan (sweet, balsamic, roasted, with coconut, almond and coffee) can be seen in Hugo Boss Baldessarini.
