About this deal

Written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by the multi-talented illustrator and print-maker Sara Ogilvie, The Detective Dog is a fast-paced celebration of books, reading, libraries and the relationship between a little boy and his rather special dog. Write a persuasive letter to your teacher to ask them if you can have a ‘reading dog’ in your school / classroom.

The Detective Dog by Julia Donaldson - Pan Macmillan

Our accessible and imaginative adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s award winning book, The Detective Dog, features puppetry, song and magical scent technology, bringing the story alive on stage for audiences of all ages. We’ll be touring the show from February half term 2024. It’s perfectly suited to studio to mid-scale theatres and we also have a flexible, stripped down design of the show which can pop-up in libraries too (more on that here). The appealing and brightly colored collage illustrations, rhyming text, and assorted animal sounds make it a natural for individual or group readalouds.” — Booklist on What the Ladybug Heard

Whether it’s finding a lost shoe or discovering who did a poo on the new gravel path, Nell’s ever-sniffing nose is always hard at work. So when the books at her owner Peter’s school have disappeared one morning, Detective Dog Nell is ready to sniff out the culprit! (Suitable for ages 3-7) Accessibility We made a smaller version of this show, which is currently touring around libraries in the South of England. See more information on that here. Gallery

Peter's dog Nell has an amazing sense of smell. Whether it's finding a lost shoe or discovering who did a poo on the new gravel path, her ever-sniffing nose is always hard at work. But Nell has other talents too. Every Monday she goes to school with Peter and listens to children read. So who better to have on hand when they arrive one morning to discover that the school's books have all disappeared! Who could have taken them? And why? There's only one dog for the job... and Detective Dog Nell is ready to sniff out the culprit! If you’re an audience member, be sure to sign up to our mailing list to find out about when we’ll be on tour with the show! Library Tour My real breakthrough was THE GRUFFALO, again illustrated by Axel. We work separately - he’s in London and I’m in Glasgow - but he sends me letters with lovely funny pictures on the envelopes. I grew up in a tall Victorian London house with my parents, grandmother, aunt, uncle, younger sister Mary and cat Geoffrey (who was really a prince in disguise. Mary and I would argue about which of us would marry him).

Funnily enough, I find it harder to write not in verse, though I feel I am now getting the hang of it! My novel THE GIANTS AND THE JONESES is going to be made into a film by the same team who made the Harry Potter movies, and I have written three books of stories about the anarchic PRINCESS MIRROR-BELLE who appears from the mirror and disrupts the life of an otherwise ordinary eight-year-old. I have just finished writing a novel for teenagers. This production sees us exploring new ways of working to create innovative and accessible theatre. The show is accessible to D/deaf children and their families by using clever dynamic captions and incorporated British Sign Language. We’re working with some brilliant Deaf artists to make sure that the show reflects the needs of the D/deaf community. Dates Nell has a very strong sense of smell and she uses this to solve crimes. Can you find out about dogs that help the police? Could you think of some questions to ask a police dog handler? Peter’s dog Nell has an amazing sense of smell. Her ever-sniffing nose is always hard at work solving mysteries and finding all Peter’s lost toys. But Nell has other talents too . . . Can you find the rhyming words in the book and use them to make your own rhyming dictionary? Use this when writing your own stories.

I really enjoy writing verse, even though it can be fiendishly difficult. I used to memorise poems as a child and it means a lot to me when parents tell me their child can recite one of my books.

Looking for something different

I studied Drama and French at Bristol University, where I met Malcolm, a guitar-playing medic to whom I’m now married. When a crime needs solving, there’s only one dog for the job! Join Nell the Detective and help solve the mystery of the missing books. Flamboyant colors, zany perspectives and a neatly circular tale lead, with satisfying inevitability, to a happy outcome for all but the thieves.” — Washington Post on What the Ladybug Heard
