It is book 8 in the Eagles of the Empire series, continuing Macro and Cato's adventures in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire that began in The Eagle in the Sand.

Later on in the series, (Centurion) we get to see Cato fall in love again, this time with the daughter of a senator called Julia. Julia and her father had been trapped in a citadel but they survived. She promises Cato that she will get married to him at the end of “Centurion”. What are you waiting for? Be ruthless in your battle strategy leaving decapitated enemies in your wake! Macro has been close friends with Cato since Cato saved his life in the first book. This bond deepens when Macro confesses that he is illiterate and asks Cato's help in learning to read, and so maintain his position as an officer.The following are books which are either stand-alone novels or have yet to be confirmed as parts of a series.

I do admire Simon Scarrow's in-depth knowledge of life in the Roman Empire, from the day to day routine of housekeeping and providing meals to the details of Army life for both serving soldiers and veterans. I haven't read all of his stuff (there's so much of it!), but this is the third 'Macro' novel I've read and it was nice to renew his acquaintance, and that of Petronella, and to catch up on their adventures in the far-flung outpost of Britannia.I've followed the adventures of Roman soldiers Cato and Macro across the Roman Empire for 20 or so novels and the standard never dips below breathless. Simon Scarrow is excellent on adventure, dialogue and character and the plots are always well crafted. This latest adventure is set in Britannia in AD60 with Centurion Macro now retired from the legions and living in comfortable retirement in Camuldonunum - or Colchester to you and me. Meanwhile, the more senior Cato, is also in Colchester 'resting' between appointments and happy to be with his new love, Claudia the Emperor's ex-mistress. This novel mirrors that approach, with the larger bulk of this following Macro and his adventures in Londinium and in the veterans colony of Camulodunum (which I've just found out is Colchester, and the first Roman Capital of the province) before the two principal characters finally reunite circa - again - three quarters of the way into the story. A brilliantly written story with an intense atmosphere throughout, great fight scenes and an unbreakable bond of brotherhood that is intoxicating. Without getting into spoiler territory, this revolves around the British legend Queen Boudica of the Iceni and her revolt against the Romans.......and with good reason. Heads roll (literally) and the bodies pile up as the revolt continues. And, of course Macro is at the centre of the action, protecting Roman interests. Where is Cato, you ask? Well, he's off on an assignment on the other side of Britain helping to eliminate the Druids so he plays no part in the actual revolt.

I want to read the rest of the series because this book can be read as a stand alone but I want to learn more about these characters. The following four books are set in Britain, between the years AD 42 and 44 - detailing the Roman subjugation of the province alongside court intrigue that often leaves the protagonists in receipt of contempt from the Roman political class. In Camulodunum Macro will meet other veterans under the leadership of Magistrate Ramirus, and they will have a severe battle against the Trinovantes tribe, where they are left to their own devices by a coward of a procurator called, Decianus Catus, and where they have to fight for their lives to reach their stronghold again, while not much later on Cato will make his appearance in Camulodunum with his son, Julius, and his woman, Claudia Acte, the supposed dead ex-mistress of Emperor Nero, and right from the start Cato is making plans to set things right for Macro and his family in Londinium. This eventful Roman adventure is already the 19th instalment of the wonderful "Eagles of the Empire" series, from the formidable author, Simon Scarrow. AD 60 and Macro and Cato are enjoying a bit of peace in Camulodunum with their families. Macro has now retired and is serving as the Senior Magistrate while Prefect Cato is still in the army but not on active duty. But their peace doesn’t last long. Governor Suetonius is making an attempt to finally conquer Britannia by defeating the Ordovices and the druids on the Isle of Mona and he wants Cato to assist him.

It was a fascinating read as Boudica’s rebellion is a fascinating topic as it’s also one that changes according to the personal point of view of the reader: feminist ante litteram, nationalist or simply someone who rebelled against the power of the Romans.

John is a film producer but also runs Universal Combat Ltd., an agency which represents ex-military personnel and provides tri-service military advice and support to the entertainment industry. As such John is perfectly placed to work on the EAGLE series of books. Lavinia appears in the first two books and is the lover of both Cato and Vitellius. She is a slave-girl who is owned by Flavia, Vespasian's wife. In The Eagle's Conquest she betrays Cato and unwittingly helps Vitellius try to assassinate the Emperor. However, when the plot fails Vitellius kills both her and the assassin to cover himself. The other half of the book is Cato heading a cohort and helping Governor Suetonius Paulinus destroy the druids on Mona.There is a desperation as the Roman Army have to crush all in their wake. Some underestimated and some not so much. If you enjoy history and the thriller genre this should definitely be on your list to read. Another excellent book in the Cato and Macro series. Macro, along with his mother, is the co-owner of a bar in London and he also plans for a rural retreat in Colchester.
